At 12.30pm on Sat. 2/10, 3 remaining wagons were in the process of
being re-railed. Some of these wagons had been derailed at the grade
crossing and had been deflected onto the BG West line; they were more
or less upright. G 517 was also at the scene to lend assistance.

Noted at the scene was an axle which had screwed in two at the
bearing. Marks on the concrete sleepers began at a point about 300
metres on the the Up side of the derailment. This suggests that a hot
box had caused an axle failure, causing the axle to drop between the
rails. The wagon would then have been dragged 300 metres until it
struck the grade crossing.
