While it would have been nice if the Mildura line had gone via Swan hill -
option 3 sounds a waste of time as the line from Piangil (a thriving
metropolis) would have to head due west (not NW) to get to Ouyen - through
Managatang (another metropolis) and Kulwin (the terminus) - collecting no
additional freight, no advantage to Robinvale or Kulwin lines as both
already have connection to coast via Bendigo/Melbourne and
Ballarat/Geelong/Portland- and would not appear to save any time for the
pass.
In this day when areas around Yass or Taree are crying out for a little bit
of straightened track to speed up freight times and reduce the road tonnage
and carnage - what stupid luxuries seem to be on offer.
I suppose they needed an option 3 as most options papers have 3 options-
and they were a bit thin on them.
As for options 1 or 2 - who cares - the routing of trains via Bacchus Marsh
or North Geelong was not particularly controversial back in the pre standard
gauge days.
