That is what remains of the former tram depot which was situated at
Bennelong Point prior to the closure of the tram system in the late 1950's
and early 1960's. I don't believe there was any connection to the heavy rail
system, but I am sure that there were plans to link (via more tunnels) to
the disused (mostly flooded) tunnels beyond the end of the former St James
shunting neck when the war moved close to home.
