Maersk is a huge Danish conglomerate that begain in the early 1900's
with a shipping line, which is still their largest business.  They own
over 150 vessels, including some of the world's largest container ships.
(in excess of 6,000 TEU capacity) They have expanded into shipbuilding,
airlines, oil exploration and production, supermarkets, retail consumer
goods, heavy manufacturing, medical supplies, auto parts, information
technology, and so on.  They probably have in excess of 25,000 employees
worldwide.  Surprised you haven't run across them before.

The company was founded by Arnold Peter Møller, and the company name is
the family name of his grandmother. Mærsk.
