It is so for the English, Australians and even New Zulanders

Americans generally refer to their new light rail vehicles as trains - they
certainly call them that in LA.
Down the coast at San Diego they do call them trolleys.  But never, ever do
they call them a tram - a tram is either an aerial cable car, or an
open-sided bus (with or without roof) of the type used in amusement parks
and National Parks.
