The East Doncaster line actually made it as far as being shown in the Melways
around 1980.
The route given had the line branch off at Victoria Park, run along the Eastern
Fwy to around 1.5 km east of Bulleen Rd, and then heading northeast, and later
east, before terminating at the corner of Blackburn Rd and King St (East
Doncaster/Templestowe).
Intermediate stations were to be at Kapman St (Bulleen) and Williamsons Rd
(Doncaster). Note that this bypasses Doncaster Shoppingtown, which I thought
would attract more traffic.
Another point of interest is that not all of the line would be underground after
turning off the Eastern Fwy - some sections would be above ground (a similar
setup to Sydney's ESR??)
