Re: [Vic] Incident at Nunawading

"Two women died in separate incidents within hours of each
other on Melbourne's rail system today, plunging services
into chaos on eastern lines.

Police said neither death was suspicious.

The two separate incidents, in which the women were hit by
trains, disrupted travel for thousands of commuters on
adjoining train lines between 6.45am and 11am.

The first death near Nunawading station at 6.45am halted
trains between Blackburn and Ringwood until about 9.30am.

Senior Constable Stewart Thomson (Thomson) of Nunawading
police station went to the accident and said there were no
suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of the
23-year-old woman.

Commuters normally using the lines serving Lilydale,
Ringwood and Belgrave were urged to head for an alternative
line.

Train company spokesman Ray Wilson said because many buses
were taking children to school, Hillside Trains had
difficulty finding transport to ferry stranded passengers
between Ringwood and Blackburn.

The death of the second woman near Mooroolbark station at
about 8.40am compounded the early morning chaos and created
a transport nightmare for Hillside Trains on Melbourne's
busiest routes until 11am.

Senior Constable Paul Smith of Croydon police station went
to the scene and said the dead person was a woman in her
late 30s.

Mr Wilson said the second death occurred on an unauthorised
crossing midway between Mooroolbark and Croydon railway
stations, on the outer eastern Lilydale line.

Police said both deaths were being treated as
non-suspicious.

Mr Wilson said more than 50 deaths were recorded on
Melbourne's train system each year, averaging about one a
week."

Ho, humm, another two bite the dust.

I wonder, have any systems around the world had any sucess
trying to reduce the numbers of suicides?

Certainly incidents like this will cost money once the
Performance Reigeme takes effect, perhaps a few fences may
become a return generating investment?
