When an emergency occurs which seriously disrupts train services and implementing normal
emergency procedures would not satisfactorily minimise delays or adequately restore train
services, the General Manager Safeworking, or other officers nominated in the table at [c] in SWU
802 and authorised by the General Manager Safeworking, may make alternative arrangements for the
safe movement of trains.

When a situation occurs that is not covered by the procedures in the safeworking manuals, an
authorising officer may introduce 8SO working to cover the situation.

The authorising officer will be held personally responsible for ensuring that every precaution
has been taken for the safe movement of trains until the 850 working has been cancelled.

When introducing 850 working, the authorising officer must keep in mind the following
principles:

that normal safeworking procedures for the movement of the train must not be disregarded until
every precaution is taken to ensure the safety of the train

that all procedures must be observed regarding:
the working of fixed signals
time intervals between trains the use of blocking facilities
the clipping and locking of all points concerned
and the use of handsignallers with flags, lamps and
detonators.

When 850 working is introduced, signallers must report the arrival of trains within yard limits
and the departure of trains from the interlocking to each other and the train controller by any
means available.
