I think journey times, and maintenance would have been taken into
consideration too.
The longest trip for the Newcastle K sets is the 3 PM service to Sydney - A
journey time of approximately 3 hours. The longest trip in Wollongong would
only be a third of that.
As for Maintenance, the Wollongong sets are Maintained at Mortdale, which has
no spare parts for K sets, as there are none allocated there. The K sets
from Newcastle are Maintained at Hornsby, where the entire K set fleet is
maintained.
