Re: It's Academic

St. Kilda to Brighton via Elsternwick railway opened on 19/12/1859 to
north Brighton (then Bay Street). The line was owned by the St. Kilda
and Brighton Railway Co. but trains were run by the Melbourne and
Hobson's Bay Railway Co.. This arrangement cahnged at the end of 1860
when the Brighton Co purchased two engines and ran their own trains
through to Melb on the Hobsons bay line.

>From St. Kilda the line was carriedon a 400 yard long viaduct across
the swamp the across St. Kilda road on a 102ft bridge which was about
25 chains north of Fitzroy Street.

The line was extended to Beach (now Brighton Beach) on 21/12/1861.

The direct line to Chapel St. (now Windsor) was opened on 22/12/1860
by the Melbourne and Suburban Railway Co.

The Brighton Co and the M&S Co began through running on 1/5/1862 with
trains no longer running on the loop from Windsor to St. Kilda. After
an accident on 22/5/1/62 the loop was brought back into use until
10/1862. The loop wsa then unused from Oct 1862 to 1867 when it wsa
taken up.

The "Electric street railway" (tram) opened in May 1906. It ran from
St. Kilda station via Ackland St., Dickens St., Elwood St., Park St.
(now Head St.), to Park St. Middle Brighton (some of these may have
been cross streets). Staff and ticket was used.
