Rail Reserves
Several elected members of Council and staff
recently held talks with Department of Transport staff
over a proposal for Council to assume ownership of
rail reserve property no longer required by rail
authorities or the State Government. The current
ownership of the land is a confusing situation in
which the State Government will be vested with the
title within the next two years but as the majority of
the land is not required they are seeking to
determine what interest exists in local communities,
via the Council, assuming ownership, The only area
that is required by Australian Rail Track Corporation
is the track corridor through the town and district.
At this stage only the rail areas within the
Peterborough township is being addressed, with
Councils primary concern being the area in between
Hurlstone Street and Silver Street incorporating the
Station and associated buildings. Of this area, the
northern side of the track which adjoins Main Street,
is owned by the Department of Environment,
Heritage and Aboriginal Affairs and is not part of the
current discussions. The area on the southern side
of the track however which adjoins Railway Terrace
is the portion being offered to Council. Three
privately owned properties are also in this area but
Council is now considering if it wishes to accept
ownership, at a cost of the station, offices, barracks
etc.
To assist Council in its consideration of this matter
comments from the public would be appreciated on if
you believe Council should pursue ownership of the
area or if it should remain a properly that the State
Government can decide to retain or more likely try
and sell to an individual or another group. If Council
is to assume ownership then it is important to realise
that the community is responsible for the buildings
and grounds and must be prepared to devote
resources to maintaining the area and possibly
making the buildings available for potential industries
to use or consider their demolition.
Please make your feelings regarding this matter
known to the Council office by Friday 12th
February, Further details are available from the
office staff.
