Why is it necessary to come up with relatively bizarre theories for the  second-person's
behaviour when there is no obvious reason to doubt the two most obvious
explanations, i.e.

(a) the one given by the secondperson himself and evidently accepted by the enquiries,
i.e. that when he saw the restrictive signals he thought there would be a few minutes
stop, and this was therefore a good time to boil the kettle (and that when the train did
not stop, he presumed simply that the signals had cleared)

or

(b) that he was simply asleep?
