[VIC] R.I.P. Metcard Xpress??

Received a buletin at work this week reguarding next year's Yearly
tickets and Student passes:

"As of the 1 January (sic) 2000, new issues of the Yearly Full Fare
tickets will be issued as Metcards." It goes on to say theat theses
tickets will have magnetic stripes as regular Metcards do and will need
to be validated every trip.

The new Yearly Metcards will be made from a material called Triplex
which is a piece of plastic sandwiched between two layers of board. (So
they don't fall apart when you leave them in your pocket and they go
through the washing machine!!)

They will still require a photo ID with the ticket. I have seen pictures
of these tickets. It is just a Metcard with "YEARLY 2000" written on the
coloured side, with some patterns.
The student passes will be identical, except that they will say "STUDENT
2000"

So, what has become of Metcard Xpress? Has it been a total failure, as
is the E-Tag system (in many ways it was an E-Tag for a person!!), or
has it just been put off for another year??
