According to superstring theory, a piece of string is roughly equal to
the Planck length. The planck length is not the length of a 4x2, but
is in fact about 10^(-43) metres. But, to complicate matters, a piece
of such string has 10 dimensions, not one.

According to another source (the "Archbishop Makarios in a bath with a
nude woman sketch"- from the Frost Report on Nearly Everything) a
piece of string is 163,000 miles long but, due to a mix-up in
planning, it has been cut into 3-inch lengths.
