Last month they were working on the up and down line between Box Hill and
Ringwood (tamping, general upgrading, maintance etc) after last train each
night.

They are at Burnley for this work on the Line between Burnley and Camberwell
they have already done sections on the down line around Glenferrie and
Auburn.

The tamper wasn't there on my way home, but the ballast regulator and 
(something else which removes ballast or something) were still there.

Rumor: Box Hill signal Box will go to station staff operation (but only
switched in during morning and evening peak)  It is surrently part
time signaller.  The advantage of this is that if the signaller at
Camberwell can't get the signal for the centre line he can issue an
ATC caution order or send the train down the down line.  But you need
a signaller at Box Hill for this.
