Re: Sydney O Class at OERHS

Yes, Bill, the Sydney P class tram 1700 at Seashore is in operating
condition although it does not run very often due to the fine flanges (a
problem with their British trams, also). American tramway flanges are
closer to our railway flanges in size. The Sydney Tramway Museum supplied
full details and paint samples to Seashore a year or so ago and they are
looking into getting the illuminated 'Women's Weekly' advertising operating
again. They told us the details we supplied gave them more information
about the Sydney P design than they know about many of their US cars.

Incidentally, O class car 1187 in Oregon apparently was ratted for parts by
Paul Class when it was at Glenwood. It now only has hand brakes, and
possibly only two (instead of four) motors. The car was also (and still is
to some extent) painted in odd colours. This included being painted yellow
instead of cream and having a red line instead of black. Numbers on the
front apron are also black instead of cream and appear twice on each end.

Bob Merchant

Subject: Sydney O Class at OERHS

| The Oregon Electric Railway Historical Society obtained Sydney O class
| tram 1187 when the 2nd generation Sydney tram system was closed down.
| The OERHS had a museum line at Glenwood, outside Portland but a few
| years ago quit that site and moved to a new, larger site closer to
| Portland, Oregon... co-locating with some other rail museum activities
|
| Initial operation at the new site was done towing a diesel generator
| on a small trolley, but the overhead was energised about a month ago
| for a summer rail festival.
|
| Pictures of O Class 1187 in operation at the new site, freshly painted
| and looking very good, can be seen at:
|
| http://www.trainweb.org/oerhs/roster/syd1187.htm
|
| As well as US equipment from the North West states, the OERHS also has
| an English double deck car in its fleet, which you can also find
| photos of on the web site.
|
| Does anyone happen to know the current operational status of the
| Sydney P Class tram at the Seashore Trolley Museum in Maine?
|
| Cheers,
|
| Bill
