Murwillumbah

I think the most that will ever happen  is that the two lines meet at Coolangatta somewhere, just like Albury once was.

The cost of running SG through to Bris is too high and what for, most passengers on the XPT go to the GC anyway. From Coolangatta the NG line to Brisy will go inland anyway, bypassing most of the tourist strip, so whats the point in the XPT going further north.
Freight may justify the cost of laying a third rail, but it would have to be a lot of frieght. The most that will likely happen is a container terminal at Coolangatta for road transfer. The Murwillumbah branch has too many bends to compete with the SG line to Brisbane and with a major Nth/Sth line being developed to run west of the mountains to by-pass the hilly coast, then it would have no hope.

Anyway, even if there was a return to the twice a day Murwillumbah service I do not beleive the NSW Gov or any other group will be standing up to fork out the $60-100M cost of running the line to the boarder. Maybe a commuter/frieght service to Brisbane/GC from the Tweed area might mean the NG is pushed into NSW in 20years.
