I think he does - airline travel has its place - I fly to Melbourne every
January - but then, I normally umpire at the NSW Open final on the Saturday,
and am required to be in Melbourne on the Monday morning - flying gives me
the option of having a day to go and pick up my uniform, etc.

I do not think that anyone seriously suggests that train travel is a serious
option for those who *need* to travel - it is more an option for those who
*have* to or *want* to travel, and this is mainly die to timetabling, etc.
