Sydenham electrification

The two local newspapers, "Brimbank Independent" and "Brimbank
Messenger" today carry front page news of the electrification to
Sydenham.

Major points:

- Current Sydenham station to be demolished and new station built at
Watergardens Shopping Centre north of the current station; new station
will include a 1000 car carpark and bus interchange;

- New station to be built near Taylors Road (ie ½ way between St
Albans and Sydenham);

- completion by June 2001;

- 66 daily trains compared to 14 V/Line trains;

- Queensland Investment Corporation which spent $150 million to build
the 32,000 sq m Watergardens Centre will contribute an unspecified
amount towards the building of the station;

- St Albans traders want the line undergrounded at St Albans account
congestion at boom gates which they say will dramatically worsen.

Not stated, but it means that a new platform/station will need to be
built at St Albans, as there is no up platform (yes there is, but it's
on the north side of Main Road and is/was known as the "country"
platform) opposite the down platform and station building.
