I rang the PTC and this is how it goes:
To be on PTC propity you need a Valid ticket.  A valid ticket is one wit
an expiry date.  (and correct zone, concession etc..)  So once you have
validated you metcard once (ie has expiry date) then you don't need to
validate it again.  The person I talked to refused to tell me why you need
to validate your ticket at stations with out barriers.  The only reason at
stations with barriers is to open them.
