There could be another problem with running at such speeds (550km/h). As
such a service would be mainly aimed at the business market, it stands to
reason that many would be carrying digital mobile phones, some of which
would be used for connecting laptop computers. GSM phones use a doppler
system for calculating the distance between the phone and the tower, and
adjust the broadcast strength accordingly. At the sort of speed a
Transrapid would be doing, it would play havoc with the doppler and could
cause the phone to cut out.
