BROAD GAUGE SERVICES OPERATING FROM/TO MELBOURNE OR WITHIN ONE REGION
ONLY

BROAD GAUGE PASSENGER TRAINS:

First Digit	8 

Second Digit

0 	Northern (beyond St. Albans)
1 	Western (Broad Gauge) (beyond Sunshine to Ararat; also to be
used 
                for all Broad Gauge services to/from Ballarat and 
               Maryborough or beyond routed via North Geelong 'C' 
               Box).
2	Western (beyond Werribee)
3	North Eastern (Broad Gauge) (beyond Broadmeadows)
4	Eastern (beyond Dandenong)
5	Metropoiitah (including Long Island and Stony Point)
6	Allocated to North Eait (Stiindard Gauge) 
                (Melbourne-Albury-Bandiana)
7	Allocated to Western (Standard Gauge) (Melbourne-Wolseley, 
                Maroona-Portland, Ararat-Maryborough-Dunolly, 
                Murtoa-Hopetoun and Dimboola-Yaapeet).

Third Digit	An Odd or Even number

Fourth Digit	Down trains - Odd numbers Up trains - Even numbers

BROAD GAUGE SUPERFREIGHTER, GOODS OR DEPARTMENTAL TRAINS AND LIGHT
LOCOMOTIVES:

First Digit

0             Light Locomotives scheduled in the Network Service Plan 
               or by 'S' Circular, except where the Light Locomotive 
               concerned is directly formed by or forms a scheduled 
               Goods service for performance statistics purposes.
7	Met Area Work Trains and Track Machines scheduled by 'S'
Circular.
9	All scheduled Superfreighter, Goods trains, all Work Trains or
Track 
                Machines.

Second Digit

With the exception of scheduled Standard Gauge Goods services, Met
Area Work Trains or Track Machines scheduled by S Circular, the second
digit is tied to the Regional Corridor as described above for
Passenger trains. 

Western Standard Gauge Wrks Trains or Track Machines will be assigned
7 as the second digit.  

North East Standard Gauge Works Trains or Track Machines will carry 6
as the second digit.  

The Second Digit for Met area Works Trains or Track Machines may be
0-5 for trains/machines operating direct to/from Flinders Street, 6 or
7 for trains/machines operating via the City Loop from Richmond,
Jolimont and North Melbourne and 8 or 9 for trains/machines operating
via the City Loop from Flinders Street.

Scheduled Goods services from the Northern, Western, South Western and
North Eastern corridors terminating east of Flinders Street will be
considered as Inter-regional (see next section) and will be assigned 4
or 5 as a second digit depending upon their destination.
Scheduled Goods services from the Eastern Side of Flinders Street
terminating at locations beyond Werribee, Rockbank, St. Albans or
Broadmeadows will be considered as Inter-regional (see next section)
and will be assigned 0, 1, 2 or: as a second digit depending upon
their destination.

Third Digit          An Odd or Even number

Fourth Digit       Odd numbers - Down trains.  Even numbers - Up 
                             trains

BROAD GAUGE INTER-REGIONAL SERVICES
BROAD GAUGE PASSENGER TRAINS:

Any passenger train scheduled to originate in one region and terminate
in another will carry separate Train Describer Numbers in each region
according to principles described in the previous section due to the
requirements of Performance Statistics and the Metrol Train Loading
System.

BROAD GAUGE SUPERFREIGHTER, GOODS OR DEPARTMENTAL TRAINS AND LIGHT
LOCOMOTIVES:

First Digit           

0	Light  Locomotives
9	all Supertreighter, Goods and Departmental Works Trains or
Track 
                Machines.

Second Digit      Tied to the Region In which the train terminates.

0	Northern (beyond St. Albans)
1	Western (Broad Gauge) (west of Sunshine and North Geelong 'C'
Box)
2	South Western (beyond Werribee, Exception: Up services from
the 
                Western Region terminating in the Geelong and bounded 
                by South Geelong and Corio retain 1 as the second
