They were put in during the construction of the Eastern Suburbs
railway for future expansion.

Anyone have any piccies of the construction of these platforms?  I
believe they were made by the open cut method, in much the same way as
most of the City Circle line was constructed. (I have some piccies of
this construction in a book called Sydney Tunnels by B&B Kennedy).
