I live on the south side of Brisbane (next to the train line at Salisbury)
and would suggest the following locations. This is not exhaustive but
they would be a good places to consider:

1) Coming around the bend at Salisbury after the Beaudesert Rd level
crossing. There are three tracks - one dual gauge and two narrow
gauge. You can get freight trains to/from Acacia Ridge, IMU's
to/from the Gold Coast, suburbans and XPT to/from Sydney.

2) The sg level crossing at Acacia Ridge that crosses Beaudesert Rd. The
engines really pull hard up the hill there. Go in the afternoon when
the southbound NR freights leave. There is one around 3pm that's
   a regular starter.

3) Around Yeerongpilly. The railcar goes from there to Corinda.

4) While around the Corinda area try along the four line section between
Corinda and Chelmer for the freights to/from Moolabin/Acacia Ridge plus
freights heading west. Also south of Corinda you should see the
occasional coalie/wheatie coming to/from the west to Fisherman Island
   via Tennyson and Dutton Park.

5) A visit to Acacia Ridge yard might be of interest. The loco stabling
point is right near the entrance if you want to get pictures of locos.
There'll be NR's, some 81's, QR electric & diesel locos.

Best wishes for your trip.
