Briztram officially dumped

On page 6 of todays Courier Mail (Wed 29 July) it says:

"The Beattie Government has officially dumped the Briztram project,
but will investigate another light rail network for Brisbane's inner
city.

"But there will be no cross-river link between West End and the St Lucia
campus of the University of Queensland if the Government eventually
gives the go-ahead."

"Thirteen consortiums which had expressed an interest in constructing
and operating the project will have their unopened proposals returned
to protect the intellectual property of the proponents."

"Premier Peter Beattie, who represents Brisbane Central, said Labor
now was looking for some "futuristic" light rail concept rather than
the Coalition's model, which involved old technology."

So it looks like a light rail might or might not happen depending on the
result of the investigation. Funding will no doubt be an issue as well.
