In fact even where there is 60kg/m rail and there arnt many level crossings
that are protected its still only allowed 130 km/h.
If the only problem is the level crossings, why not simply place a 130km/h
speed board ahead of the level crossing with a 160km/h speed board after it ,
so that the train simply slows down for the level crossings.
There are numerous sections of the melb - Albury SG line where the level
crossings are few and far between where higher XPT speeds could easily be
achieved.
