Well actually I reckon wherever you go you end up having to go through
suburbia unless you can connect to the Illawarra line somewhere.

Actually the Illawarra line is not bad once you get to Thirroul. I vividly
remember traveling regularly on the 5.07pm train from Central when it was
made up of Budd and Tulloch cars. The hairiest part of the trip south of the
Thirroul stop was going around the island platform at Bellambi.
