That's all it was, a rumour.

The claim that there have been "numerous" non electric moves through the loop
is a bit optimistic. There have been a grand total of 6 such movements
recorded, no doubt there may have been a couple more in emergency situations.

Apart from exhaust considerations the signal spacing in the loops is not set up
at all for loco. hauled trains.
