Recently Ghan extend to Melbourne and it leaves Melbourne every
Wednesday and Saturday, arrives Alice Spring on the second day
away from Melbourne, I suggest you book your train ticket from
Melbourne to Alice Spring and QUICKLY! because as far as I know
the ticket is sold out completely before middle of Feburary
next year.

Ps: you choosed the right train! The Ghan is one of the best
train in Australia!
