Premier, HON. ROBERT BORBIDGE

21/4/98

MAJORITY SUPPORT BRIZTRAM NETWORK

Seventy five percent of residents surveyed in the proposed Briztram network area say they personally support the light rail project for inner Brisbane going
ahead.

Support peaked at St Lucia (96 per cent) followed by Spring Hill and the City (82 per cent).

Overall 92 per cent of respondents are aware of Briztram, with unprompted awareness high across all suburban areas surveyed.

The community attitudes survey was conducted by ACNielsen Research Pty Ltd as part of the Briztram project planning.

Commenting on the survey report today, Premier Rob Borbidge said he was delighted with the results which backed the Government's judgement about the
project.

"It is an exciting development that will help give Brisbane a world class transport system," Mr Borbidge said.

The telephone survey of 400 people aged 17 and older, conducted from March 23-25, was exclusively of residents living within the proposed Briztram
network area.

Suburban groupings were: New Farm/ Merthyr/ Teneriffe;Herston/Newstead/Bowen Hills; City/Spring Hill/Fortitude Valley; South Brisbane/West End/Dutton Park/Highgate Hill/Hill End; St Lucia (part only).

Among other findings:

Most think Briztram will make it easier for people to get into and around the city (79 per cent) and give Brisbane more vitality and character (76 per cent).

It is generally seen as having social benefits (70 per cent), economic benefits (70 per cent) and likely to reduce traffic congestion through greater use of public transport (65 per cent).

Few perceive it as noisy or unsightly (21 per cent).

Eight in 10 (80 per cent) of newer residents personally support Briztram.

The report says that seven in 10 respondents consider it likely they will use Briztram on a regular basis - 36 per cent very likely and 35 per cent fairly likely.

Differences of opinion were noted across suburbs:

- Herston/Newstead (89 per cent) and Spring Hill/City (89 per cent) residents seem more likely to feel Briztram will make it easier/faster to travel into and around the City, while New Farm/Teneriffe/Bowen Hills residents (75 per cent) are the least likely to agree.

- New Farm/Teneriffe/Bowen Hills residents are also the least likely to think Briztram will give Brisbane more vitality and character (71 per cent), but those in other suburbs show equally high agreement.

- Slightly more New Farm/Teneriffe/Bowen Hills (74 per cent) and Spring Hill (74 per cent) residents see the light rail network as being socially beneficial through encouraging greater use of restaurants, entertainment, etc.

- St Lucia residents are the most likely to perceive Briztram resulting in economic benefits (85 per cent), while those in Spring Hill/City (66 per cent) and South Brisbane (67 per cent) are less likely to think this.

- St Lucia residents are also likely to perceive reduction in traffic congestion (88 per cent) as are Spring Hill residents (80 per cent). People in St Lucia are less sure about a positive effect on property values (52 per cent).

New residents show stronger support for the Briztram development, with 80 per cent who have lived in their suburb for less than five years stating
approval.

This compares with a lower, but still majority, 70 per cent of longer term
residents.
