Minister for Transport and Main Roads, HON. V. G. JOHNSON

14/4/98

ROBINA RAIL EXTENSION OPENS ON MAY 31

The Gold Coast railway extension to Robina will open with a family fun day on Sunday 31 May, Minister for Transport and Main Roads Vaughan Johnson announced today.

Mr Johnson said free shuttle rail services would run between Robina and Nerang on 31 May with regular rail services beginning between Robina and Brisbane Central from June 1.

"More than 2.5 million passengers have used the Gold Coast railway since electric trains began running to and from Helensvale in February, 1996.

"With the line now extended to Nerang, I am confident that passenger numbers will grow substantially with the opening of Robina Station," said Mr Johnson.

The Minister said that the $375 million railway would provide a comfortable, 70 minute link between Robina and Brisbane Central.

Robina Station has 670 free car parking spaces, 98 bike lockers, 10 bus bays, 10 taxi spaces, 10 motor cycle spaces and a number of passenger drop-off spaces.

Buses will arrive on a bridge over the railway to allow quick and convenient access to the station concourse and ticket office.

Mr Johnson said the family fun day on 31 May at Robina would be held between 9am and 4pm. The day will begin with a breakfast, followed by the official opening by Queensland Premier Mr Rob Borbidge about 9.30am.

There will be on-going entertainment provided by Queensland Rail and Gold Coast theme parks. Attractions will include competitions, free amusement rides, street performers and an outside radio broadcast.

Robina Station is located off Robina Town Centre Drive.
