Minister for Transport and Main Roads, HON. V. G. JOHNSON

16/4/98

QR SEEKING EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FOR DURESS BUTTONS

Queensland Rail is advertising nationally for expressions of interest for the supply of duress buttons, Minister for Transport and Main Roads Vaughan Johnson said today.

Mr Johnson said Queensland Rail was keen to assess whether the private sector wished to establish and run such a system, or merely provide the system as another component of its extensive safety package for rail passengers.

"Queensland Rail ran an extended trial of the duress buttons in March at nine stations.

"A number of technical issues, however, still need to be resolved. These include the solution to false alarms," Mr Johnson said.

"This will be one of the issues that will need to be addressed by companies who respond to the advertisements."

He said although regular users of the duress alarms reported an improved sense of security, the real costs of the duress buttons needed to be compared with other security measures.

Mr Johnson said Queensland Rail's Citytrain Trainsafe programme, costing $17 million, was yielding results.

"Already 82 out of 123 stations have video surveillance and 44 trains also are similarly equipped.

"These measures are proving strong deterrents to anti-social behaviour on the Citytrain network," said Mr Johnson.
