Minister for Transport and Main Roads, HON. V. G. JOHNSON

16/4/98

MINISTER ANNOUNCES CO-ORDINATED BUS SERVICE TRIAL FOR HERVEY BAY

A coordinated bus service between the Maryborough rail station and Hervey Bay will be trialed mid-year, Minister for Transport and Main Roads Vaughan Johnson announced today.

Mr Johnson confirmed that discussions between Traveltrain and Wide Bay Transit were underway for proposed bus services to convey Queensland Rail passengers between Maryborough Rail and Hervey Bay.

"While details of the services are yet to be finalised, initial discussions have centred on daylight services consisting of one or two services per day, seven days per week," said Mr Johnson.

"The service will be introduced mid-year, with the trial lasting between three and six months."

Queensland Rail currently operates a 22-seater courtesy coach between Maryborough Rail at Lennox Street and Maryborough West station, meeting all passenger rail services.

Mr Johnson said it was envisaged that the existing service would continue, with the new Hervey Bay service carrying Queensland Rail passengers unable to be accommodated on courtesy services to Maryborough West.

"This new service is specifically designed to address the increasing public demand for a broader coordinated bus service for Maryborough Rail," Mr Johnson said.

"It also recognises Hervey Bay's position as one of Queensland's key growth centres.

"The onus in future will rest with commuters to utilise the proposed Hervey Bay connection to warrant the continuation of the service following the trial period," he said.

The coordinated bus service trial in Maryborough preceeds the introduction of proposed Tilt Train services to the city from October.
