Major Delays in Melbourne 16/10/97

Hi,

I've just got home from running 8246 WMB-MSS, and I can tell you there's
been major delays to V/Line services out of Melbourne tonight.

Somewhere a power/signalling cable was taken out (allegedly in the
vicinity of the Moonee Ponds Creek near Nth Melb Jcn, but I can't
confirm that yet), resulting in all sorts of problems, and delays of up
to 2 hours to country trains. Not sure of the effect on Met trains,
some at Spencer St reckoned Metrol had pretty much given the sparks all
priority and left the country services languishing.

As an example of the delays, we (8246) ran up unscathed (arr MSS 2 early
at 21:02), we normally cross 8237 (the 18:00 WMB pass) at Winchelsea
around 19:25, well tonight we 'crossed' at Newport at 20:44! Two V/Line
passes were right behind our train as well (which apparently was further
delayed at GEX by the Waurn Ponds), and T409 was shunting sand at
Spotswood when we passed.

By not doing the cross at Winchelsea, we arrived at GEX at 19:44 (16 min
wait till departure time!)

A down SG Superfreighter went through Lara on the down at 20:15, The
Overland was just climbing the flyover at 20:58, it had
CLP12-Motorail-HM-7 cars

Cheers,
Craig.
