That is the Eastern side, or Cairns platform side. They now reserve seats, so
you should try to book early and ask for that side.
I was last there in January, 1993, late at night on the down (up the hill) and
0430 in the morning on the up on the Forsayth mixed.

Brisbane is not used as the point of measurement. I think it is done from
somewhere like Ipswitch but I am not sure of the exact location. Down is AWAY
from that point. Up is towards it. For example, a train from Ipswitch to
Brisbane is a down train.
