There were a lot of poorly concieved level crossings in WA, on curves etc
with just a stop sign. Mostly small farm or backroad crossings. Suddenly
they all appear with 60kph speed restrictions, due to the poor visibility.
These killed the freighters as they were invariably at the bottom of banks.
It pissed the drivers off, as they often had locked gates, and were only
used by the farmers at seeding or harvest.

Slooooowly.... They are removing these crossings, and rebuilding them on
straight sections.
I don't know for sure, but we heard that the Main Roads Department was
responsible. Granted one life saved is worth it, but we would have used
thousands in diesel, powering up banks we should have coasted up for free.
