PUBLIC MEETINGS TO DISCUSS
A series of public meetings will be held to discuss the need for an improved public transport corridor in the Southern Gold Coast and Tweed areas, Transport and Main Roads Minister Vaughan Johnson announced today.
Mr Johnson said the meetings, to be held in the next fortnight, were part of a Queensland Transport investigation into transport requirements of the highly populated southern Gold Coast.
Among the options to be discussed were a bypass at Tugun and rail extension from Robina to Coolangatta.
The meetings, and a Needs Paper released publicly in early November, form part of the Southern Gold Coast to Tweed Corridor Study. The Needs Paper was supported with maps showing current land use zoning and development commitments.
The maps are on display at a Study shopfront on the corner of the Gold Coast Highway and 7th Avenue Palm Beach. Staff are also on hand to answer public enquiries.
"I urge local residents to take this opportunity to meet with consultants Connel Wagner and Queensland Transport staff and gain a clearer idea of the transport needs and issues in this fast-growing region," Mr Johnson said.
"It is important for members of the community to have their say at the earliest stage so that any new transport infrastructure is planned to best service their travel needs and avoid significant impacts on their living environment."
"The Southern Gold Coast to Tweed Corridor Study will identify a corridor for a high quality, integrated public transport system between Robina and Coolangatta. It will consider the option of extending the rail line and how to develop a Tugun bypass as an alternative to the Gold Coast Highway."
The public meetings will be held on:
Thursday, November 27, 1997, 3-5pm (Qld time), at the Tugun Progress Hall,
433 Drive (alongside Tugun Hotel), Tugun;
and 7-9pm (NSW time) at the Tweed Shire Council Auditorium, Brett Street,
Tweed Heads;
on Tuesday, December 2, 1997, 3-5pm (Qld time) at the Robina Common
Community Centre, Ron Penhaligon Way, Robina;
and 6.30-8.30pm (Qld time) at the Palm Beach Currumbin Sport Club, Thrower
Drive, Currumbin.
