You can go into the gorge as well - start from Lithgow and drive out
to the north past the old steel works up into the forest - the way
is well marked. Eventually you come to a sign which proclaims this
to be the site of the Deane siding and from there you more or less
follow the railway alignment down through a tunnel and around the double
horseshoe to a parking area. From there you can walk further down
the gorge on the old railway to the second tunnel, and with a torch,
through it.
(Or you could three or four years ago - one of the NSW contributors
may have more recent information (and more precise directions!)).
You can also get to Newnes - follow the Mudgee Road out of Lithgow
until you get to a road sign then follow this road. The Wolgan
Valley seems very remote with the ramparts of the Blue Mountains all
around you.
There are a number of rail vehicles on display in the open at Newnes
and a brief explanation of the Wolgan Valley Railway.
