One of my first encounters with J.S. was in 1966. One day that year,
myself and a couple of other PBPS Schools Section mates, were
following the route of the Outer Circle from Oakleigh. Apart from a
ride on a Swing Door spark from Alamein to Riversdale, we were on the
bike the whole time. After we finished following that route, we headed
for the Fiztroy line and decided to follow that. To our good fortune,
T362, on a goods train, was shunting around the yard. Adding to our
good fortune was the fact that it was being driven by J.S. We
introduced ourselves and he invited the three of us for a ride in the
cab to North Melbourne where the train was going to shunt at Arden St.
We stowed our bikes in the Z and had a most memorable journey.

I later had more dealings with Jim and it was a pleasure finding a
railway man who loved his job. A railfan himself at a time when to
work for the railways and be a railfan was regarded as lunacy, he
encouraged us with his kindly attitude towards railfans. If only more
were like him.
