It comes down basically to people who obtained their properties at reduced
values (because of the railway/flightpath/freeway/[insert other value
reducing thing here]) and who are now looking to try and increase that value
by reducing the effect of whatever it was that made their properties cheap.
The same thing happened with Mascot airport, which has been there since the
1920's. We also see this with weekend track maintenance shutdowns, when such
work could easily be carried out at night if it wasn't for the noise
complaints of those who moved in knowing the railway was there.

Not just the mountains. They had to put in noise barriers at Hornsby sheds
because of complaints.
