The Northside Storage Tunnel is a sewerage overflow tunnel.

It captures overflow from the sewerage system in heavy rain which prior to
the tunnel would have discharged into Sydney Harbour.

In effect it is a big hole in the ground from which the overflow is pumped
out through the normal sewerage processing plants after the rain has stopped
and the system can again cope.
