As unfair as it is, I'm not sure that's a valid excuse anymore. By now I
would think that we all *know* they don't take coins.

But of course in staffed stations, the machines are more likely to be
working! Triffic, isn't it!

They say you should make a reasonable attempt to buy a ticket. I think
arriving at the station with money and finding all the machines not working
would fall into that.
