>From Column 8 in today's Sydney Morning Herald:
Fare Evasion - it costs us all, proclaims a CityRail advertisement in This
Paper this week. Hmmm. A number of readers are puzzled by its phrasing.
It is an offence not to:
. carry your concession card with you.
. use a station outside the range of your ticket or,
. avoid using the automatic gates.
In such a list, each item should read on from the opening line. So, yes, it
is an offence not to carry your concession card, but is it also an offence
not to use a station outside the range of your ticket? And is it an offence
not to avoid using the automatic gates?
On the day CityRail launched its anti-evasion campaign, says Reg Lobb, of
Stanwell Park, PA announcements at about noon at Central Station were saying
that, due to a technical problem, tickets could not be issued at the station
and commuters should pay at their destinations. "But many outlying stations
are not staffed in the afternoon," rightly says Reg.
