Do as they do in at least of Germany city, charge a premium of say 50 cents
for all tickets purchased from a conductor.  When it starts to hit the
hip-pocket nerve even the illiterate and pensioners will suddenly learn how
to use a ticket machine.
Serve yourself has been accepted in supermarkets and for petrol at 'service
stations', banks' hole-in-the walls etc, what's wrong with serve yourself
ticketing?
