I ride my racer style bike everywhere, and am always taking it on the
trains, it is a pain in the a$s when they are doing trackwork and you have
to throw it on a bus and as Anita said, try to travel out of peak period and
there is no problems at all. I have also seen MANY people doing the same
thing. The V sets even have a special hook near the doors for hanging bikes
from the front wheel.
