Perhaps people are playing games with the meaning of the word "are", but
people who say there "are" 6 platforms at Wynyard are scarcely answering
the original query. There were only ever 4 rail platforms at Wynyard;
the other two were tram platforms which of course have long since ceased
to exist.

Also the two centre platforms at St James were never used for trains, so
there have only ever been two functional platforms there.
