mmm......the button thing does relate to the guard opening the doors?
Though I don't see need for that is it was an 8car G-SET (i.e. The 
Springwood 
Services going to the North Shore! Rode on that service a number of times), 
and I believe that the buttons are there to open doors if necessary so it 
dosen't disturb the airconditioning flows?
(It's like that on a V-SET door)

Also, speaking of Endeavour doors, I'm not sure about it, but I think the 
guard just releases the doors to be opened or not.
this was the case when I was at Central on the 6/1/01, and inspecting a Moss 
Vale Endeavour from Platform 3, The guard had Opened ALL doors (Platform and 
non-platform sides!) for me to wonder around the train
 (It was 2hrs before it would depart, and practically no one was on the 
platform)
