Monorail's seem to have siezed the public imagination in a science-fiction
era.
They are not fast, they are not smooth.  They save land, by placing a large
amount of infrastructure in a very visible position.

Wuppertal (Germany) is the oldest, and quite successful: running over a
river and over a road.
Japan has a few:
Haneda airport, and a little-known new one in an eastern suburb.
