Do you think the reduced maintenance cost on the Hume Highway will be
that significant? I would have thought that the majority of damage
caused to the road would be from heavy freight (read truck) operation
(rather than cars), and my understanding is that the Speedrail project
is for passenger traffic rather than freight.

I am not expert in the matter, so please feel free to correct me if I
am mistaken!
