I was in Cairns last year and visited the "new underground" station.

The roof was high enough for overhead wires and the QR employee I spoke to
expressed great pride that someone had common sense to allow for future
expansion of the 25 kV network.

However, he did say that it was unlike to see any overhead wires to Cairns in
the near future (say next 20 years!)
